Off sales extended to the end of September 2023

Regulations have been passed extending the automatic entitlement for licensed premises to benefit from an off sales permission through to the end of September 2023, advises Pub & Bar. Aside from a limited number of exceptions, licensed premises in England and Wales will now be able to continue to sell alcohol by way of off sales via home deliveries and outdoor sales, for example, providing a welcome boost to the sector. It remains to be seen if this further temporary extension will be made permanent.

Clive Watson and Ashley Letchford to launch Chelsea pub

City Pub Group chair Clive Watson and Ashley Letchford are teaming up to launch an upmarket Chelsea pub that will offer a British-Basque menu overseen by Masterchef winner Dhruv Baker. Launching mid next month, King's House is in the King's Road site that was once home to Letchford's The Jam Tree gastropub concept, reports Big Hospitality.

Red tape 'cut for thousands of businesses'

More businesses are to be categorised as small, meaning thousands will be released from reporting requirements and other regulations, Liz Truss has announced. Businesses with fewer than 50 employees were previously exempt from certain regulations, reports The Caterer. From yesterday (3rd October), the prime minister announced plans to widen regulation exemptions to businesses with fewer than 500 employees for future and reviewed regulations, which is expected to encompass an additional 40,000 businesses. The government said the move could save companies "thousands of pounds", adding that the exemption would "be applied in a proportionate way to ensure workers' rights and other standards will be protected".

Boxpark picks Liverpool for first site outside London

Due to open in late 2023, the 16,000 sq ft leisure complex will be located in the historic Canning Hall, part of the Cains Brewery Village estate, reports Place North West. Boxpark, which operates from three locations in London, has signed a 15-year lease on the Liverpool site, which will be transformed into an all-day dining and entertainment venue through a £3.5m investment.

59% of pub owners think they will be open in 12 months

Almost six in 10 pub operators think their venue will still be open in a year's time, new research has found. The study from virtual brand business Peckwater Brands of 200 UK pubs also revealed under half (43%) were optimistic about the future of their business while just more than a third (39%) had confidence in the Government's support for the hospitality sector, reports Morning Advertiser.
