Central London's hospitality sector is recovering after suffering hundreds of licensed premises closures during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the latest Hospitality Market Monitor from CGA by NIQ and AlixPartners. Research for the Monitor shows that central London saw a net decline of 540 licensed premises in the three years between March 2020 and March 2023 - 15.6% of the city's pre-Covid total and equivalent to one closure every two days. The heavy toll reflected London's dependence on commuters and domestic and overseas tourists for hospitality visits, advises the Restaurant.
Publican Awards winner Urban Pubs & Bars is set to launch a site at Waterloo station with an opening date of mid-September, reports Morning Advertiser. Urban Pubs and Bars' first foray into the competitive station market in a 5,080 sq. ft. establishment - The Victory - situated upstairs on The Balcony at Waterloo station will be the group's 41st site.
Heartwood Collection has secured £100m of additional funding as it prepares to grow its portfolio to over 60 pubs and nearly 500 rooms by June 2027. The hospitality and pub group founded by Raymond Blanc and Mark Derry announced that funding will be used to acquire freehold pubs and pubs with rooms across the UK over the next four years, advises The Caterer. It also revealed aims to develop 500 boutique bedrooms, which would bring the total number of Heartwood employees to 2,700.
Star Pubs & Bars is investing £6.8m in developing outdoor areas and revamping pub exteriors in 2023. The investment from the Heineken-owned pubco is set to benefit 220 pubs, creating a series of gardens themed with the brewer's cider and beer brands, reports Pub & Bar. Around 70 pubs will be given upgraded outside eating and drinking areas, expanding the number of covers and extending the outdoor season to nine months of the year.
The average price of a pint of beer has risen by 50p in just over a year, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics. Beer Today advises that over the 12 months the average price of a pint of bitter has risen from £3.50 to £3.80.
